Some of these houses span the period from before the American Revolutionary War to the 21st Century. The people who lived in these houses gave the city its initial character and direction. Nimmo, is a historical review of the houses and the incredibly talented artisans of the 18th century (and sometimes infamous pirates) who lived in them. For example: Newport is the only city in the United States to accept a donated building from a wealthy pirate of the 1700's (or any other period) in our nation's history. Potter Elementary School on Elm Street was donated by a pirate to the City of Newport to be used as a school.
